The Theology and the Arts Research Initiative brings together scholars from across the spectrum of artistic media—literature, visual arts, music, film and entertainment—to undertake a sustained examination of works of the imagination and the distinctive contributions that Christian faith brings to the arts. The goals of the Initiative are:

  • To create new conversations within academia that explore the vital relationship between Christian faith and the arts, and encourage a Christian voice in scholarly endeavors focused on the arts.
  • To produce a body of work by networks of scholars in the arts that will shape future curricula and scholarship.

Phase I launches the Christian Poetics Initiative, a collaboration of local and national working groups seeking to formulate a Christian understanding of literature and literary criticism for the 21st century. The local working group is in the process of formulating vision and direction for this initiative and will begin hosting colloquia that explore Christian reading practices in December 2016.
